Thane: A notorious wanted criminal has been arrested on the alleged charges of snatching chains from the morning walkers in Navi Mumbai, the police said.
Addressing a news conference at the Navi Mumbai police headquarters, Police Commissioner Bipin Kumar Singh said that the police has also detained a juvenile who was an associate and partner in the crime.
He said that following repeated incidents of chain snatching from the morning walkers the police in Navi Mumbai was ordered to be active and nab the accused.
The police had zeroed in on the notorious criminal Vijay Deepak Chavan, 20, from Govandi of Mumbai.
The accused used to commit their crime in Navi Mumbai on a motorcycle and target the morning walkers.
The police said that following the arrest as many as six cases of chain snatching have surfaced, of which four were from Navi Mumbai and two from Mumbai.
The police further said that following the arrest of Chavan several cases in the limits of Sanpada, Nerul, Vikhroli and Powai police stations have been detected. Offences against the accused were also been registered against Shivaji Nagar, Mankurd and Govandi police stations and against the juvenile at the Shivaji Nagar and Vikhroli police station the police said.
The police have also recovered stolen booty worth Rs 4.35 lakhs and a two wheeler worth Rs 1 lakh used in the crime.
