Kohima: To motivate the general public to help road accident victims during emergencies, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced the “Good Samaritan Scheme.”
The official report on Friday said that under the scheme, anyone who saves the life of a fatal road accident victim by administering immediate assistance and rushing them to the hospital within the “Golden Hour” will be awarded.
The scheme came into effect on October 15, 2021, and shall remain operational till the completion of the 15th Financial Cycle which is 31st March 2026. The amount of award for each Good Samaritan would be Rs. 5000 per incident. Also, there will be 10 National Level Awards for the most worthy Good Samaritans who will be selected from all those who have been awarded during the year with a cash award of Rs. 1,00,000 each.
The report said that a standard and uniform Format of acknowledgment is to be used by the Police or Hospitals and furnished to the Appraisal Committee at the District Level comprising the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Chief Medical Officer, and the Regional or District Transport Officer.
The Appraisal Committee shall scrutinize the details of the Good Samaritan and the incident, under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner before submitting to the Transport Department for release of the cash award, it said.
