Nagaland CM claims improvement in power distribution and supply in the state

Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has stated that the power supply in the state has greatly improved and it has become the first state in the North East to reach 100 per cent of all recognized villages; however, it was unable to make a profit on resale of power.

Replying to a question of MLA Amenba Yaden on the floor of the 7th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly yesterday, Rio, who is also the Minister in-charge of Power, stated that the losses in the power sector are mainly due to widely spread consumers across all strata of society, high level of rural distribution and tendency of consumers evade payment for their actual consumption.

He informed that the Power Department is taking up various initiatives like introduction of online payment of electricity bills, installation of pre-paid meters and engagement of anti-power theft police squad.

Rio said that the challenges in power sector are very huge and collective effort of both the Power Department as well as the society are required to tackle the matter together.
