Myanmar seizes over 3,500 tons of illegal timbers

The Forest Department has been cracking down on illegal logging and trading of forest products and committed to implementing tree plantation projects in substitution.

Naypyitaw: Myanmar authorities have seized over 3,500 tons of illegal timbers across the country in 10 months this year, according to figures by the Forest Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation on Thursday.

As of October 31, the authorities confiscated over 1,061 tons of teak, over 548 tons of hardwood and over 1,909 tons of other types of timbers in the country’s regions, states and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory.

According to the department’s data, 593 offenders were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 393 vehicles and machines during the ten-month period.

The Forest Department has been cracking down on illegal logging and trading of forest products and committed to implementing tree plantation projects in substitution.
