Gangtok: The Sikkim government will engage a multi-disciplinary expert team to inquire into the causes of the collapse of the Chungtham dam following the abrupt eruption of the South Lhonak Lake in the northern part of the state, a top official said on Tuesday.

“Once the situation stabilises, a multi-disciplinary committee of experts would be engaged to look into the causes behind the whole incident,” said state Chief Secretary V B Pathak.

Responding to questions about the possibility of arms and ammunition causing damage to the Dam, Pathak maintained there was no such report. 

“When the gushing water was flowing downstream the ammunition could not have exploded,” said Pathak, also the Chief Executive Chairman of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA).

A natural disaster hit Sikkim is facing a tremendous loss of life, property and assets. The Teesta River has seen a rise in water level and is overflowing through Singtam, Rangpo and other human habitations along the river bank, sweeping away houses and their occupants.
