Imphal: The Manipur Government Tuesday suspended mobile internet service after massive protests erupted following the alleged kidnapping and killing of two youths in the state. These measures are set to remain in effect until 7.45 p.m. on October 1.
The situation took a distressing turn when a police response to a protest resulted in injuries to over 50 students. The protests erupted after photos of the bodies of the two youths went viral on social media.
The suspension of mobile service was necessitated to check the spread of fake rumours, disinformation and other types of violent activities through various social media platforms as well as the likely mobilization of mobs, agitators and demonstrations which might cause damage to the public and private properties or aggravate the law and order situation in the state, a statement issued by State Home department said on Tuesday.
