Mizoram becomes new hub of illegal drug trade originating from Myanmar

Imphal: Mizoram has become the latest hub of illegal drug trafficking originating from Myanmar, thanks to the current ethnic violence in Manipur since May 3 last month, sources said.

With roads being blocked along the highways of Manipur, drug smugglers have shifted their trade route from Manipur to Mizoram, said the sources. 

A close study of media reports revealed that as many as drugs and other contraband worth over Rs 78 crore have been seized from Mizoram since the 3rd of May, the day violence broke out in Manipur. 

The violence in Manipur might have disturbed the peace in the State but Manipur appears to be getting some relief from the drug menace which originated from Myanmar and smuggled through the porous border of Manipur and Myanmar, it added.
