Shillong: Samborlang Diengdoh, who is the official candidate of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from the Pynthorumkhrah assembly constituency, has opted to contest the forthcoming Meghalaya assembly elections as an independent candidate, saying that he wants to refrain from “mud-slinging” politics.
Diengdoh was on the list of the 52 TMC candidates declared by the Mamata Banerjee-led party a fortnight ago.
“The main reason for me to quit the party is that we want to refrain from mudslinging politics and promote constructive politics,” Diengdoh told reporters.
“I will still contest the upcoming election, but as an independent candidate. Despite the fact that I am not campaigning for myself as the TMC candidate…I have been campaigning for myself as Samkhamti only,” he said.
Diengdoh will face veteran BJP leader and former Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek and senior Congress leader P. N. Syiem.
