Shillong: The Meghalaya Education Department has issued guidelines for educational institutions to ensure the health and safety of students are not put at risk due to the prevailing heat wave conditions, an official said on Friday.

In a notification issued by the Director of School Education and Literacy, Swapnil Tembe, educational institutions have been asked not to organise any outdoor events during the ongoing heat wave situation in the state.

Tembe has asked authorities in schools and colleges to ensure that students remain hydrated, and provision to provide ORS or lemon water should be made available for students who suffer from dehydration.

He said that prolonged exposure to heat, especially during the period from 12 to 3 p.m., should be avoided, and students should be encouraged to use caps and umbrellas while coming or going to school.

“It should be ensured that students do not walk barefoot inside or near the school premises. In case of dehydration, the student should be taken to the nearest health care facility,” Tembe said.

Meghalaya has been witnessing a spike in temperature during the past week, and the temperature has been above normal by at least 5 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state.

Schools in several areas of the Garo Hills region in the western part of Meghalaya have been closed due to the heat wave.

Meanwhile, in a separate order, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner announced that all educational institutions located around the Dangar area under Mawsynram block will remain closed with effect from April 21 for a week or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
