Meghalaya: Family members of ex-militant leader to depose before inquiry commission

Shillong: The family members of the former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militant leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew will depose before the one-man Commission of Inquiry headed by retired Chief Justice of Tripura High Court Justice T. Vaiphei on Saturday.

“We will depose before the Commission of Inquiry on Saturday,” Granary Starfield Thangkhiew, the younger brother of the former HNLC leader, said.

He, however, refused to divulge details on who among the family members will depose before the commission of Inquiry.
Earlier, the family members of Cheristerfield had claimed that his death in “encounter” was a “cold-blooded murder” committed by the police on August 13.

The Commission has given time till September 25 for people to submit their statements. However, till Friday, no one had come forward to submit their statement in connection with the incident.

On August 18 the State Government had assigned the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission chairperson Vaiphei to head the judicial probe into the encounter death of Cheristerfield.
The report has to be submitted within three months.
