Shillong: In one of the largest drug seizures in the country, the Shillong Regional Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has recovered 2.21 kg of high-quality heroin drugs Heroin worth Rs. 15.54 crore, a DRI official said on Friday.

The seized heroin smuggled through the India-Myanmar border was seized from makeshift secret cavities in the vehicle at Mawryngkneng area in the outskirts of Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong in the early hours of Thursday.

Sleuths of the DRI intercepted a vehicle in which the two suspects were traveling in at Mawryngkneng and on searching the vehicle found 150 soap cases weighing 2.22 kgs of pinkish powder wrapped in polythene sachets from the possession of the suspects.

Tests conducted with the NDPS field test kit confirmed the presence of heroin in the substance recovered.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment had come from Manipur and was meant for the Shillong-based drug syndicates. The presence of makeshift secret cavities in the vehicle indicates its usage for the trafficking of narcotics in the past as well. Follow-up searches and further investigation is in progress.

In 2022 DRI in the North Eastern Region seized over 21,000 kgs of narcotics including methamphetamine, cannabis, and heroin valued at over Rs. 65 crores in the international illicit market.
