Shillong: The Meghalaya government has written to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) informing that the majority of the colleges in the State are not yet ready to implement the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Education Minister Rakkam Sangma said that the state government had received letters from 43 colleges out of which 33 colleges have expressed that they are not ready to implement the NEP within this academic year.
“We have also written to the NEHU Vice-Chancellor three times on May 17, June 27 and July 25 informing him that almost all the colleges are not ready yet to implement NEP during this academic session and that most of the institutions are requesting to defer implementation to the next academic session,” Sangma said.
The Education Minister, however, informed that prominent colleges in the state have decided to implement the new NEP this academic year.
Sangma said that the state government has held several rounds of meetings with NEHU authorities on the implementation of NEP.
“We have told the Vice Chancellor of NEHU to discuss with the heads of educational institutions on the matter. It was after these discussions, NEHU has agreed to implement the new NEP on a hybrid mode,” he said.
Under the NEP, the undergraduate courses would be of a four-year from the current 3-year duration. Moreover, students have the choice of having multiple entry and exit points.
Under this system, a student can opt-out after one year and get a certificate or get an advanced diploma after two years, a bachelor’s degree after 3 years and a bachelor’s with research after four years.
