Imphal: Manipur’s lone Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MLA Karam Shyam joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Thursday.  Interestingly, LJP is a ruling partner in the present Biren-led BJP government in Manipur.

Shyam, who is currently an MLA from the Langthabal Assembly constituency, announced his resignation from the primary membership of LJP last Tuesday.

Earlier, announcing his intention of joining the ruling party, Shyam said that the initiative of the Central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra  Modi was remarkable and that he wanted to serve the people of the state under him.

“It’s for this very reason that I have decided to join the BJP and fight in the coming election of Manipur Legislative Assembly from Langthabal Assembly constituency,” he added.

Shyam formally joined the BJP in the presence of party president A Sharda Devi, party’s in-charge for Manipur Sambit Patra and other senior officials of the saffron party.

Confirming the development, state BJP president A Sharda Devi posted video footage of Karam Shyam joining the BJP and captioned: “Langthabal constituency’s MLA Shri Karam Shyam joined@BJP4Manipur in presence of National Spokesperson and State Prabhari Shri@sambitswaraj ji at Thambal Shanglen, Imphal”.

Chief Minister N Biren also extended the heartiest welcome to Karam Shyam into the party fold.

“Heartiest welcome to Shri Karam Shyam Ji, Hon’ble MLA Langthabal AC, as he joined the@BJP4India today! The dynamic leadership of Hon’ble PM@narendramodi Ji and the party’s principles continue to gain the faith of prominent leaders from different parties,” Biren tweeted.

Shyam is the third high profile MLA who has joined the ruling party in the last one week. On Monday,  former Congress legislator from Sagolband AC and MLA Yamthong Haokip of the Congress had joined the BJP at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
