Imphal: Janata Dal (U) candidate Khwairakpam Devendro Singh, son of (L) Khwairakpam Jatra Singh of Awang Sekmai Makha Leikai filed his nomination from 16-Sekmai (SC) Assembly Constituency, Wednesday, the second day of filing nomination in respect of the first-phase of polling. Devendro’s nomination was supported by ten proposers.
Filing of nominations for the first-phase of the upcoming General Elections to Manipur Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to be held on 27th February, began on February 1.
Notifications of elections for the First Phase in respect of 38 Assembly Constituencies of five districts – Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi were issued by the concerned Returning Officers yesterday. Nomination papers will be received till February 8 and scrutiny of nomination papers will be taken up on February 9; while the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be 11th February.
Meanwhile, District Election Officer/DC, Imphal West Th. Kirankumar, alongwith Superintendent of Police, Imphal West Ksh. Shivakanta briefed media persons this afternoon regarding the poll preparedness of the district at a press briefing held at the Court Room of the DC/DEO, Imphal West at Lamphelpat.

The DEO said polling stations in the Singjamei Assembly Constituency will be manned by all-women polling personnel to encourage more female voters. He also stated that unlike previous elections, this year instead of using loudspeakers during departure of polling personnel for their respective polling stations, colour-coded vehicles will be utilized for easy identification while transporting the polling personnel to their respective polling stations within the district.
SP Shivakanta also briefed about the security preparations undertaken in the district ahead of the election and highlighted conduct of security checks, seizure of liquor, etc.
