Manipur: Mobile internet services suspended in Jiribam district for five days

Some anti-social elements are using social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passion of the public

Imphal: In view of deteriorating law and order situation in the Jiribam district following the announcement of poll results,  the Manipur government has imposed a ban on mobile internet/data services for  the next five with immediate effect in the district.

“Some anti-social elements are using social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passion of the public. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, etc, have also become a handy tool for rumour mongers and are being used to incite the general public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the district,” said a statement issued by state home department here on Saturday. 

It also said that to thawat the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony and to prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private properties, it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in public interest. 

It also asked all mobile service providers to ensure compliance of the order and further warned that any person found guilty for violation of aforesaid orders will be liable for legal action.
