Manipur logs 554 new COVID-19 cases, 15 more deaths

In the last 24 hours, 751 people have been discharged including 535 from home isolation. The cumulative number of recovered cases is 49,653. The recovery rate has improved to 83.70 per cent.

Imphal:  Manipur reported 554 new COVID-19 cases and 15 fatalities in the last 24 hours, which took the tally in the state to 59,322 and death toll to 959, an official said on Saturday.

Fifteen persons – one each at RIMS, CMC, Home Isolation, DH Thoubal, CCC Moreh, two each JNIMS, Raj Medicity, and DH Churachandpur, four at Shija Hospital expired.  Among them four were from Imphal West, three each at Imphal East and Thoubal, two each at Bishnupur and Churachandpur and one at Kakching.

Of the 554 fresh cases, Imphal West has the highest number of cases at 171, followed by Imphal East- 118, Churachandpur- 54, Thoubal-73, Bishnupur- 35, Senapati -17, Chandel -14, Jiribam -21, Kakching-19, Kangpokpi-12, Tamenglong-7, Pherzawl -2, Ukhul -1. Kamjong and Noney reported no case of Covid-19 during the past 24 hours.

The number of fresh Covid cases in Manipur has been falling in the last three days. This downward trend in fresh infections comes after weeks of rising cases amid the deadly second wave of the pandemic, which led to shortage of medical oxygen in hospitals in the early days of the second wave.

On Saturday, 687 new cases and 19 more deaths were reported in Manipur. The state has a total of 8,710 active cases, down by 212 from yesterday.

Chief Minister N. Biren attributed the sudden jump in the COVID-19 mortality rate due to the co-morbidity of positive patients.  He also inaugurated a newly set up COVID Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/Accident Trauma Centre at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS). The ICU has a capacity of 100 beds equipped with advanced medical facilities. The Manipur Chief Minister also unveiled a 60 bedded COVID Care Centre at the multipurpose hall of Standard College, Kongba, Imphal East District on Saturday.

A total of 1454 D-type  Oxygen cylinders and 434B-type oxygen cylinders have been made available to different health facilities of Manipur. As per the latest information, the total number of persons who were vaccinated on Saturday was 6,865, totaling the number in the state so far at 4,64,465.
