Manipur: Journalist fraternity extends financial support to Kumar Nongthombam

Imphal: Showing solidarity with its members, a team of journalists in Manipur Tuesday extended financial support to Kumar Nongthombam, 39, at his residence at Huikap Mayai Leikai in Imphal East.

Working as a reporter for Image TV, a local cable TV channel, Kumar was brutally beaten up by some unidentified armed miscreants at his rented residence in Wangkhei, Imphal East on the intervening night of February 23-24.

Not only was his residence torched and burnt down by the miscreants, but he was beaten black and blue even after identifying himself as a journalist.  

Later, he was shifted to a local private hospital after he reported stomach pain and breathing problems.

On Tuesday, a team of local journalists led by S. Sonia, a senior executive member of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union visited his residence and handed over a sum of Rs 50,000 to buy his medicines and lost gadgets during the incident. Local reporters including Waikhom Chitradhani, Konthoujam Geeta, Asem Bebicha, and Babi Sarin also participated.

The money was contributed by local journalists to help him out, a member of the team said, adding that they are ready to extend more help to find another rented accommodation in the greater Imphal area.

Earlier, a team of Correspondents, who work for outside media also met Kumar and extended monetary help to him.
