Imphal: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur on Thursday, directing him to deliver it to Sepoy Tongkhongam, a 75-year-old non-pensioner soldier whose house was burnt down during last year’s violence.
The funds were provided by Support Our Heroes (SOH), a Delhi-based NGO that has been assisting needy ex-soldiers, their families, and Veer Naris/Widows since 2017.
During a meeting with the Governor, Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar briefed her on the current situation in the district. He informed her about the condition of approximately 14,000 displaced people in relief camps, stating that essential items such as food, water, and educational materials for students have been distributed.
The Deputy Commissioner also reported that the construction of 500 temporary shelter homes, sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by August this year. Additionally, skill training programs for 100 youths in the hospitality sector are ongoing, and handloom and handicraft training programs for local artisans are planned.
Governor Uikey directed the Deputy Commissioner to ensure law and order in the district, emphasizing the need for all necessary steps to guarantee the safety and security of the residents.
She reassured that the Central Government is committed to resolving the ongoing issues and that tangible steps will soon be visible. She also urged the Deputy Commissioner to initiate training programs for the displaced individuals under various schemes and programs.
