Imphal: The Manipur Government on Friday appealed to the general public as also media houses to take down videos, posts and reposts on social media about the horrific incident of two women being paraded naked on the streets.
The incident has sparked outrage across the country.
The state home department said in a notification that the prevailing law and order situation could get aggravated if videos of the incident were posted by miscreants on various social media platforms.
The notification appealed to “the general public including media houses to take down any videos/ posts/ re-posts in social media or refrain/ restrain themselves from creating/ spreading of any information/ rumours/ remarks/ comments through any medium related to the alleged incident/ such incidents or otherwise, which will or is likely to aggravate the prevailing law and order situation in the state”.
The notification said the State Government also views the matter very seriously and with utmost sensitivity “as a case of a gross constitutional violation and infraction of human rights”.
Anyone found guilty shall be prosecuted under the relevant provision of the laws of the land in force without any exemption, it said.
So far five persons involved in the incident were arrested by Thoubal district police. The houses of the alleged perpetrators were also attacked by people in the area.
