Manipur Governor Uikey lends supports to young Gymnast

The gymnast and her family have been residing in a relief camp since last year due to ethnic violence, and she was later admitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Imphal: Laipharakpam Kiranmala Chanu, an 11-year-old gymnast who recently participated in the Inter SAI Artistic Gymnastic Tournament 2024 in Kolkata, along with her father and two others, met with the Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday. 

The gymnast and her family have been residing in a relief camp since last year due to ethnic violence, and she was later admitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Governor Uikey praised Kiranmala’s talent and, as a token of appreciation, donated Rs. 25,000 to her. Kiranmala and her father expressed their gratitude for the Governor’s support.

In a separate meeting, five members of the All Manipur Teli Association, led by Secretary Ashok Prasad Sahu, met with Governor Uikey at Raj Bhavan. They submitted a memorandum requesting her intervention in addressing the community’s grievances, particularly regarding the issuance of certificates such as PRC and ILP. The Governor assured them of her support and advised them to submit copies of their concerns to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of Manipur.

Additionally, three transgender social activists, led by Malem Thongam, met with the Governor to demand the prioritization of restoring peace and normalcy in the state. They highlighted the impact of the ongoing 14-month crisis on all citizens, including the transgender community, and sought the Governor’s support. Governor Uikey assured them of her commitment to supporting the transgender community in Manipur.
