Manipur Governor receives ‘Victory Flame’, pays homage to martyrs of 1971 war

The celebration is being held to commemorate India’s successful military operation over Pakistan in 1971, selfless sacrifice to the nation and dedication of Indian Army personnel in protecting the sovereignty of the country.

Imphal: ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’, the 50th Golden Jubilee of Indian Victory in 1971 war with Pakistan was observed at the Red Shield auditorium, HQ 57 Mountain Division, Leimakhong, Kangpokpi district Thursday.

The celebration is being held to commemorate India’s successful military operation over Pakistan in 1971, selfless sacrifice to the nation and dedication of Indian Army personnel in protecting the sovereignty of the country.

After receiving the victory Flame, homage to martyrs was paid by laying floral wreaths at Shanti Van ( War Memorial) lead by Governor La. Ganesan, Lt. Gen.(rtd) KH Singh, Lt Gen.(rtd) LN Singh and Major General Naveen Sachdeva. A tree sapling was also planted by the Hon’ble Governor as a tribute to all the martyrs of 1971 war.

Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Governor La. Ganesan said in the 1971 war one of the shortest wars in history lasting only 13 days, the Indian Army secured a decisive and historic victory over the Pakistan Army which led to the creation of a new nation – ‘Bangladesh’. He further said that the victory of India in the 1971 war has immensely raised the stature of India amongst the other countries.

Swarnim Vijay Varsh was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the National War Memorial, New Delhi on 16th December, 2020. Four victory flames or Swarnim Vijay Mashaal lit from the eternal flame at National War Memorial since then has been travelling across the length and breadth of the country.  The Governor also paid tribute to the late brave and valiant soldiers of the Indian Army and families who have sacrificed their lives during the war for the nation. Stating that India’s defence forces are one of the best troops in the world, he said that it is not hand that fights but it is the heart that fights which is why our soldiers were victorious.

The victory flame has been sent to four cardinal directions of the country and will converge back at New Delhi in December 2021.

The Governor felicitated 1971 war veterans including kin of Lance Naik Albert Ekka, the only Param Vir Chakra awardee of 1971 war, Hony Capt Surjit Singh Veer Chakra, Lt. Col R.S. Jaswal, War veteran of 1971 and also met 1971 war veteran Maj K.B.Singh, 1971.

The programme was attended by attended by Major General Naveen Sachdeva, General Officer Commanding, 57 Mountain Division, Lt.General (Rtd) KH Singh, Lt.General (Rtd) Dr.Konsam Himalaya Singh, Lt.General (Rtd) LN Singh, all ranks and families of the force.
