Imphal: Large numbers of Congress workers led by State party Chief K Meghachandra marched towards Raj Bhawan to protest the questioning of Rahul Gandhi by Enforcement Directorate (ED) here on Thursday.
Meghachandra said the Congress workers were compelled to protest in front of the Raj Bhawan as the BJP government art the Centre was trying Opposition leaders including Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by repeatedly summoning them by the ED.
The Congress party is totally against the misuse of state machinery to silence the voice of the Opposition, Meghachandra said.
He further alleged that the BJP government was trying to defame Opposition leaders by alleging false accusations. We should protect the Indian Constitution and oppose the use of state agencies like ED as a political tool, he added. Congress condemns the action of the BJP and will work to safeguard the unity and integrity of the country, he added.
The Congress workers who marched from Congress office towards the Raj Bhawan were stopped by police however many of them managed to reach the main gate of Raj Bhawan where Congress workers and police clashed.
Additional forces including women police personnel were rushed in to control the Congress workers. The party workers shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and carried festoons which read, “ stop vendetta politics”, “respect rule of law”, etc. The party has been protesting the summoning of Rahul Gandhi by ED and questioning for long hours over the National Herald case.
The Congress workers were finally pushed away by police . Party leaders said they will continue the fight to restore rule of law in the country and they stand with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.
