Imphal: Despite knowing the fact that there is a Manipuri/Meitei contesting in the ensuing general election in Assam, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren’s visit to Lakhipur to campaign for his party candidate is highly regrettable, stated All Assam Manipuri Student’s Union on Friday.
We look up to Manipur as our parent state, but unfortunately, our Manipur’s leaders always try to subdue and work against the aspiration of Manipuris in Assam, said a statement issued by the student’s body.
It further said they had already appealed and informed the Chief Minister of Manipur about the ground situation wherein one Meitei – Lairikyengbam Thoiba Singha was contesting as an Independent Candidate against a BJP candidate – Kaushik Rai, from Lakhipur Assembly constituency. Despite knowing the fact that all the Manipuris including Meiteis and Pangals (Manipuri Muslims) were fully supporting Thoiba, CM N Biren Singh came and campaigned for his party candidate – Rai, a person who is known for his delicate characters. Even if campaigning was a compulsion for the Chief Minister, he could have campaigned in some other constituencies, it added.
The student’s body also accused Chief Minister N Biren of false assurance to Assamese Manipuris while he was participating in a programme at Lakhipur.
