Manipur: 17% candidates in 2nd phase polls have criminal background

Among the major parties, 4 (40 per cent) out of 10 candidates analysed from JD(U), 4 (22 per cent) out of 18 candidates analysed from INC, 2 (18 per cent ) out of 11 candidates analysed from NPP and 2 (9 per cent) out of 22 candidates analysed from BJP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

New Delhi: Around 17 per cent candidates fighting the second phase polls in Manipur have criminal background, a report said on Friday.

According to a report by think tank Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which analysed the self sworn affidavits of all 92 candidates, 16 (17 percent) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Among the major parties, 4 (40 per cent) out of 10 candidates analysed from JD(U), 4 (22 per cent) out of 18 candidates analysed from INC, 2 (18 per cent ) out of 11 candidates analysed from NPP and 2 (9 per cent) out of 22 candidates analysed from BJP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Among the major parties 8 (80 per cent ) out of 10 candidates analysed from NPF, 12 (67 per cent ) out of 18 candidates analysed from INC, 14 (64 per cent) out of 22 candidates analysed from BJP, 6 (55 per cent ) out of 11 candidates analysed from NPP and 5 (50 per cent ) out of 10 candidates analysed from JD(U) have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore. Second phase of polls in Manipur will be held on March 3.
