Agartala: The district and sessions court of Khowai in a late-night judgment on Wednesday awarded death sentence to a 45-year-old man, identified as Pradip Debroy, for killing five people including a police inspector on midnight of November 26 last year.
The court conducted a custodial trial of the accused and concluded the judicial procedure in less than a year’s time. The court convicted him under sections 302, 307, 326, 333, 353, and 427 of IPC after deposing the witness of 28 people.
The accused Pradeep Debroy of Sheoratali locality in Ramchandraghat had gone berserk suddenly at midnight and hacked his one-year-old daughter Aditi Debroy then the elder daughter Mandira Debroy (7) with a crowbar in the house leaving injured his wife Meena Pal Debroy seriously.
When his elder brother Amalesh Debroy tried to prevent him, Pradip hit his head with the crowbar and killed him on the spot.
Receiving information, the Khowai police station staff rushed to the spot and attempted to detain him, Pradip attacked police inspector Satyajit Mallik and killed him on the spot. Taking the advantage of darkness, he ran away from the house and attacked a pedestrian identified as Krishna Das (54) who later died in the hospital.
However, finally, the police managed to arrest him and submitted a chargesheet within three months against the accused.
Pradeep, a petty businessman, had been addicted to marijuana (Ganja), which caused a continuous dispute in the family. He had quarrels with his wife on the day of the incident and suddenly he had turned violent, the investigation revealed.
Based on the evidence, witnesses, and the statement of the accused, the court convicted and awarded death penalty.
However, the judgment would be executed with the approval of the high court of Tripura, as per the provision of the law, the public prosecutor said.
