New Delhi: The government has issued as many as 63 show-cause notices to the manufacturers, importers, and sellers of weighing and measuring instruments on e-commerce platforms seeking details of their compliance with the law.

The notices sought to know details of the model, manufacturing, import, dealer license, and verification of weighing scales.

“It has been observed that some manufacturers or importers … are selling the person weighing machines and kitchen scales on the e-commerce platforms without complying with the provisions of law,” a statement said.

“Such unauthorized sales on e-commerce sites have not only created a deficiency in service to the consumer but have also caused revenue loss to the government,” it said.

To protect and safeguard the interest of consumers, the manufacturers or importers of the weighing and measuring instrument are required to get the approval of the model (Section 22) of their weighing and measuring instrument, manufacturing license (Sec 23), or importer registration (Sec 19) and verification or stamping of weighing and measuring instrument (Sec 24) under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, it said.
