New Delhi: Congratulating weight lifter Mirabai Chanu who won the Silver Medal at Tokyo Olympics and thereby brought India its first medal in the event, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday said that once again the women power of India has made the country proud at international platforms.
The entire country is proud of her performance in Tokyo, Birla said.
Hoping that the medal won by Mirabai Chanu would inspire other sportspersons in their Olympic journey, Mr Birla once again wished the Indian contingent to participate in Tokyo Olympics.
Chanu clinched a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo 2020 as India won a medal on the first day of the Olympic Games for the first time in its history, in Tokyo on Saturday.
The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg+115kg) and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver at Olympics.
Chanu’s win comes two decades after Indian trailblazer Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. Malleswari won a bronze medal in the women’s 69kg weight category at the 2000 Sydney Games.
