Imphal: Normal life was completely affected in Manipur due to a day-long general strike called by the National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) to protest the signing of a merger agreement between Manipur and Government of India on 21 Sep 1949 which led to annexation of Manipur to Indian Union on 15 Oct 1949.
All educational institutes, business establishments were closed down due to the strike.
Most of the inter and intra state passenger services were also cancelled. Streets were also deserted. Security measures were taken up to ensure that no untoward incident took place.
The NRFM had called the strike to oppose the confinement of the then Manipur King Buddhachandra at one of his residencies at Shillong and forcing him to sign the Manipur Merger Agreement.
