J&K: Unabated freezing cold grips Kashmir, -4.4°C in Srinagar

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the minimum temperature in Srinagar plunged to -4.4°C on Wednesday against the -3.7°C recorded the previous night. It was -2.9°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

Srinagar: Unabated freezing cold continues to grip Kashmir Valley as Srinagar records a low of -4.4°C on Wednesday.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the minimum temperature in Srinagar plunged to -4.4°C on Wednesday against the -3.7°C recorded the previous night. It was -2.9°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 2.0°C above the normal of 9.0°C recorded the previous day.

The mercury in Pahalgam improved by a few notches after recording the season’s coldest night at -6.9°C on Tuesday, which was recorded at -6.3°C on Wednesday. It was 1.9°C below normal for the tourist hot spot in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Gulmarg recorded a low of -4.4°C against the -6.6°C recorded on Tuesday. It was 0.48°C above normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.

Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir, recorded a low of -4.0°C against the -4.2°C recorded a day ago, while Kokernag slipped down to -3.3°C on Wednesday against the -3.1°C recorded Tuesday night.

The minimum temperature at Kupwara further dipped to -3.5°C on Wednesday, against the -3.1°C recorded the previous night. It was 1.1°C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.

The weather will mainly remain dry until December 23, and from December 24-26, it will be generally cloudy with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches, the MET office said, adding that “overall, there is no significant weather activity till December 26.”

Kashmir weather, an independent weather observer said,“Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the influence of a weak Western disturbance. As a result, partly cloudy to cloudy weather conditions are expected during the next four days. Minimum temperatures are also expected to rise by a few degrees.”

“Between Friday night and Saturday morning, light rain or snow can occur at some places in J&K. Snowfall can also occur in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, he said, adding that “precipitation can continue to occur at one or two places until Saturday evening .”

“Overall, mainly dry weather is expected until the end of this month,” he added.
