Infantry Day is celebrated by the Indian Army to commemorate a significant day in India’s military history. On 27 October 1947, the infantry units were airlifted to Srinagar to defend Jammu and Kashmir against an invasion by tribal militias and Pakistan Army. This was the first military operation conducted by independent India, and it marked the beginning of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948.
