Imphal: As part of the Indian Army’s ongoing “Decade of Transformation,” General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, attended the rollout ceremony for the newly overhauled T-90 Bhishma tank. The overhaul was carried out by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) at the 505 Army Base Workshop in Delhi Cantonment.
The comprehensive overhaul of the T-90 Bhishma marks a crucial step in maintaining the operational readiness of the Indian Army’s armoured forces. Since its induction in 2003, the T-90 has been a key component of India’s mechanized forces, known for its superior firepower, mobility, and protection.
The overhaul process involves completely disassembling the tank, right down to the smallest components, and then rebuilding it. More than 200 assemblies and sub-assemblies are carefully removed, repaired, and reassembled using precise machining and resetting techniques.
The skilled technicians at the 505 Army Base Workshop, equipped with customized machines and test benches provided by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), demonstrated their expertise by independently refurbishing and testing the mechanical, electronic, and instrumental components of the T-90. Each part undergoes rigorous testing using Automated Test Equipment (ATE) before being reinstalled, ensuring the tank is fully operational and ready for all-terrain missions, giving it a renewed lifespan.
General Dwivedi praised the dedication and technical expertise of the EME technicians and officers, encouraging them to continue innovating and pushing the boundaries of their capabilities.
The successful overhaul of the T-90 tank reflects India’s growing self-reliance in defense capabilities, in line with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative. As the Army continues its transformation, this achievement highlights the nation’s ability to independently maintain and enhance critical warfighting platforms. Strategic initiatives in defense manufacturing and maintenance aim to elevate India’s defense capabilities to new levels, according to a press release from the Defence Public Relations Office, New Delhi.
