Birmingham: Indian boxer Shiva Thapa failed to repeat his good performance at the pre-quarters as he bowed out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games after losing to Scotland’s Resse Lynch 1-4 in the Men’s 63kg light welterweight category on Day 3 of the mega event.

Thapa came into the match carrying a burden of high expectations, especially after defeating Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch 5-0 in the first round of the Men’s men’s 63kg lightwater category on Friday.

The Indian pugilist started the bout convincingly, but Lynch’s height and arm reach overpowered him completely.

Thapa won the first round to take the lead against Lynch, but the Scot rode back and won the second round in a tightly fought bout.

Lynch continued with confidence and clinched the third round, ending with 4-1 points to storm into the quarterfinal.

Thapa has had success at the World Championship by winning bronze in 2015. Ever since his performance has been on the downslide. He lost in the 2016 Rio Olympic and failed to qualify for Tokyo Games.

This season also has not been good for him. Thapa made a quarterfinal exit in the World Championships in Belgrade and failed to win any medal at the prestigious Strandja.
