Idukki: Six spillway shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam in this district of Kerala were raised to 60 cm on Wednesday to discharge 3,005 cubic feet of water per second due to heavy rains in the catchment areas.

The spillway shutters were raised in view of a heavy inflow of 3,131 cubic feet of water per second into the 126-year-old dam, sources said.

The current water level in the dam stands at 138.95 ft against the maximum capacity of 142 ft.

Earlier, Kerala Government urged the Tamil Nadu government to limit the water level in the dam at 137 ft.

However, the Supreme Court directed to follow the Rule Curve and limit the water level at 139.5 ft till November 11. The Apex Court will hear the case on that day.
