Heavy rains, hailstorm wreak havoc in Manipur’s districts

Hailstones as big as cricket balls have completely covered the ground. Commuters on two-wheelers suffered head injuries as the hailstorm started unexpectedly.

Imphal: Heavy rains accompanied by hailstorms wreaked havoc in several parts of Manipur on Sunday afternoon. Properties, livestock and vegetable crops are destroyed, officials said. 

The hailstorm which started around 1:30 at noon destroyed vegetable and fruit farms in several districts including Imphal West, Bishnupur, Noney, Kangpokpi, and Tamenglong. Hailstones as big as cricket balls have completely covered the ground. Commuters on two-wheelers suffered head injuries as the hailstorm started unexpectedly.

Vegetable crops are completely damaged and seasonal fruits like mangos are also badly affected. Innumerable numbers of birds have also died.

Dinesh Singh, who runs a Floriculture farm in Imphal West, said seasonal crops and plants have just started flowering,  however, the sudden hailstorm destroyed everything. 

The reports said that normal life in Noney district was completely affected by the natural calamity.  The roofing sheets of many dwelling houses and temporary structures were blown out by the strong wind in many places of the district. Trees were uprooted and fell upon the houses and damaged many houses.

The reports further noted that Noney bazar was completely flooded by water coming down from hills.

On the other hand, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh urged the affected residents to contact their respective district commissioners with photos of the damage for assistance.
