Imphal: The Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey said that the role of media is very important in raising consciousness to promote peace, harmony and brotherhood beyond caste, religion and personal interests.
Speaking at the 49th Foundation Day celebration of Manipur Press Club held today in Imphal, Governor Uikey said that Foundation Day is an occasion for celebration and self-assessment. The occasion also provides an opportunity for all members to come together, exchange ideas, reflect on past activities and discuss possibilities and challenges for the future. She said it is a matter of happiness that the Manipur Press Club is equally promoting literacy and media literacy in society. As it is known that media is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy, the media has received such great respect and due to this the responsibility of the media also increases.
Governor said, the media person should be capable enough to broadcast the news impartially and fearlessly with truth. A journalist should be patient in times of crisis, presenting the news in real form rather than sensationalizing and it is the qualification and the religion of journalism. Media plays an important role in increasing awareness in the society.
Governor continued that the media should work to preserve the rich heritage and tradition of the country, promote democracy, and remind citizens of their duties. Media should also show sensitivity in broadcasting news related to women and children. In the past, during times of crisis in the state, the state media has presented the events in a balanced manner with reality. She congratulated everyone for their commendable work. Despite problems, our media persons do not succumb to threats and pressures at any cost. She recalled her early career and motivation from the media. The Governor donated a sum of Rupees One lakh for the development of Manipur Press Club.
Earlier, upon arrival at the Manipur Press Club (MPC), the Governor laid a wreath to the Journalists’ Memorial Pillar and laid the foundation stone of Manipur Press Colony. She also opened the Media Resource Centre of MPC.
MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also attended the programme. He thanked the media fraternity for their indomitable role and efforts to restore peace and harmony in the State and appealed to them to contribute their best efforts in future too. Bijoy Kakchingtabam, President, AMWJU, Khogendra Khomdram, President, EGM, Director, IPR, Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, former office bearers of MPC and journalists attended the programme.
