Government Fish Farms to be leased out fish farmers

He said this step is being taken up by the government with the objective of increasing fish production and also encourage unemployed youths of the state to help to generate income.

Imphal: Fishery Minister S Rajen Singh said that the government maintained fish farms across the state will be leased out in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to interested fish farmers. State Cabinet will take a decision very soon in the regard, he added.

 Minister Rajen was speaking to the media during a press conference held in his office at Old Secretariat, Babupara, Imphal. He said this step is being taken up by the government with the objective of increasing fish production and also encourage unemployed youths of the state to help to generate income.

Stating that there are reports of unauthorized encroachment on government-maintained fish farms by some individuals of the areas during the recent days, he said notice has also been served to one individual for unauthorized encroachment on the Regional Pengba Farm, Haotak, Kumbi in Bishnupur District. The Minister appealed to all the concerned individuals to stop such illegal acts and cooperate with the government initiative.

Minister Rajen informed that more than Rupees four crore is spent every year to buy fish from other states. This money can be saved if we focus on the development of the unused fish farms in the state. All the concerned officials of the department have also been instructed to chalk out suitable plans in this regard, he added. 

He also highlighted the Loktak Livelihood Mission through which farming of fish through Cage Culture will be widely practiced in Loktak lake. This will also help to generate income of the farmers.
