Itanagar: Keeping alive the age-old tradition, the Gorzam Kora festival is being held at the 13th century-old Gorzam Stupa at the ‘Vibrant Village’ Zemithang in Tawang district from March 18-21.

The last administrative headquarters of the Indian administration towards Tibet border, Zemithang is one of the villages being developed under the Vibrant Village Programme.

The tradition of Gorzam Kora i.e. visiting pilgrimage sites and circumambulating the historic stupa amidst prayers has been continuing since time immemorial.

Earlier, pilgrims from Tibet, Bhutan and other neighbouring places used to visit this place during the last week of the first lunar month and the programme would culminate with taking of blessings from the high lamas on the last day i.e. Amavasya of the first lunar month.

Amid the Gorzam Kora festivities, the district administration in collaboration with Indian Army, Gorzam Bumtsok Committee and Pangchen Sports Club organised a Run for Plastic-free Jemeithang on Sunday.

“Gorsam Kora Festival continues with the traditional ethos of ecological harmony with the nature. Indian Army assisted civil administration in organising a fun run for plastic-free Zimithang amidst reverberating hymns from Gorsam Chorten,” stated a tweet from Army’s Gajraj Corps or IV Corps.

The event was flagged off by Brigadier Vikash Lal in presence of Jemiethang-Duitongkhar ZPM Lek Norbu, EAC i/c Deewan Mara, MMT Tawang unit president Pema Chowang, senior Army officers and Gaon Burahs of the area.

Further, keeping the age-old tradition, the Indian Army and administration facilitated the visit of pilgrims and tourists to the holy tree of Grong Kukpa at Khinzemane.

It is believed that this holy tree was planted by the Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama when he entered India in 1959 via Khinzemane to Zemithang route in Tawang.

The pilgrims and tourists also visited the Namkha Chhu War Memorial and paid their tribute to martyrs of 1962 Sino-India war.

Coinciding with the ongoing Gorsam Kora festival, a health camp was conducted on Monday at Zemithang under Vibrant Village Programme wherein 76 patients were facilitated with treatment and free medication, lab facility and ultrasonography.

Devotees from Tawang and West Kameng districts and neighbouring Bhutan will take blessings from Padmashree awardee Thegtse Rinpoche at Gorzam Stupa tomorrow.
