Imphal: A goods train having 13 bogies was flagged off for Manipur from New Guwahati railway station on Sunday.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren said, “In a significant milestone, the first goods train loaded with essential commodities has been flagged off from Guwahati goods yard, bound for Khongsang Railway Station in Tamenglong District. This marks a new era of faster and more efficient connectivity for Manipur.”
The Khongsang railway station is about 106 km from the state capital Imphal and works were expedited at the railway station to store goods to supply essential items to Manipur.
Following a blockade of the national highway at Kangpokpi on May 3 there is a shortage of essential supplies including petroleum products, food, and construction materials. So, during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit of to Manipur, a decision was taken to transport essentials up to Khongsang.
The Jiribam to Imphal railway project covering 111 km began in 2004 and its completion has been delayed due to the difficult terrain. Once completed, the journey from Imphal to Jiribam is likely to be covered within two and a half hours.
