Shillong: Meghalaya police on Tuesday seized 1168.182 Kg of ganja, worth Rs 3.5 crores from a Guwahati-bound cargo truck in West Jaintia Hills district.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has lauded the State police for seizing the huge consignment of ganja and termed the seizure a “stellar catch”.
“We have seized 1168.182 kg ganja packed in 80 packets which are in rectangular shape covered by tightly wrapped brown tap from cargo truck at Mookyndur checkpoint in the wee hours of Tuesday during a routine check of vehicles plying through the route,” Bikram D. Marak, the district police chief of West Jaintia Hills, told UNI.
He said the market value of the seized contraband is worth Rs 3.5 crore.

Marak said the driver and his helper of the cargo truck bearing registration number RJ.10 GB 1424 fled away before the police team found that the truck was loaded with contraband.
“A hot pursuit was made to a certain extent but taking advantage of the darkness, the duo managed to disappear from the area,” Marak said, adding that an investigation is on to trace the two persons.
In his tweet, Chief Minister Sangma, said “Jowai_Police recovered 1168.18 KG Ganja worth ₹3.5 Crores in wee hours from a truck at Mookyndur while transiting to Guwahati through MeghalayaKudos to @MeghalayaPolice for yet another stellar catch. Continue your tirade against drugs with unwavering commitment.”
Meanwhile, Director General of Police L. R.Bishnoi assured to reward all Police personnel who stall a huge consignment of ganja.
