Puducherry: The federation for People’s Rights (FPR) here on Sunday urged chief secretary Rajeev Varma to issue a circular preventing IAS officers(Government secretaries) from indulging in political activities.
FPR secretary G Sugumaran in a statement said it is common that the government secretaries to meet the chief minister, ministers, and speakers for official reasons, But the secretaries meet them and congratulate them on the completion of one year of the new government in office is tantamount to political activity, he said.
Sugumaran said recently an IAS officer against whom corruption charges are pending met those in power and congratulated them for completing one year in office and gave them shawls.
This is to be done to escape from the corruption charges against him and to get powerful portfolios, which is clear politics, he added. As per the Central Civil Service (conduct) rules 1964, clause 5(1), government employees could not indulge in politics, and stringent action be initiated against such persons, Sugumaran demanded.
