Agartala: At least five BJP cadres were injured in an alleged attack by villagers in Amjadnagar area of South Tripura district, police said on Sunday.

CPI-M leader Tapas Datta, however, complained to the police that the locals retailed only after the BJP cadres attacked his party’s office on Saturday night.

All the injured persons were undergoing treatment at the Belonia district hospital. Police said the warring groups lodged two separate complaints, blaming each other for the violence. However, no one has been arrested yet.

Additional police deployment has been made in the locality to quell the tension. The district police have also issued an advisory to the people to maintain peace and tranquillity.

The BJP MLA from Belonia Arun Chandra Bhowmik alleged that CPI-M cadres had made an “unprovoked and planned” attack on their supporters to instigate communal sentiments.

However, Datta accused BJP cadres of creating chaos and preventing a political programme of their party since morning and attacking the party office and a local CPM leader in the even, promoting a sharp reaction from local residents.
