CPI-M condoles death of Dr Yumnam Mohendra

Dr Mahendro became the Secretary of its state unit from 2004 to 2007. He also participated in various social movements in the state.

Imphal: The CPI-M state unit has condoled the demise of its leader Dr Yumnam Mohendra at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 86.

During his early student life, Mohendra joined various students’ movements and later became a leader of the All Manipur Youth League. In 1973, he represented India at the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students, an international event organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth and the International Union of Students which was held on the theme of ‘For Anti-Imperialist Solidarity,  Peace & Friendship’ at the erstwhile East Berlin in East Germany, said statement issued by Kshetrimayum Shanta, Secretary CPI-M, Manipur State Committee.   

After finishing his PhD in History from the Gauhati University, Dr Mohendra entered into the profession of teaching and went on to become the Principal of Thoubal College, Moirang College and Oriental College, Imphal. He also served as College Development Officer at Manipur University before he retired from the service.

After retirement from active service, Dr Mohendra took his plunge into electoral politics by joining the CPI-M and became the Secretary of its state unit from 2004 to 2007. He also participated in various social movements in the state.

On his sudden demise, the CPI-M and its party workers observed a two-minute silence and sent their sincere condolences to the aggrieved family, Shanta added.
