Counting of votes underway for 25 MLC seats in Karnataka

There are 75 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council and the ruling BJP has 32 seats, eight short of the majority mark.

Bengaluru: Counting of votes for the Karnataka Legislative Council Elections is underway here on Tuesday.

Both the BJP and Congress are confident of winning a majority of the 25 seats.

The results are expected to be clear by Tuesday evening. Voting for the 25 MLC seats from 20 local authorities constituencies was held on December 10 in which around 99.8 per cent voter turnout was recorded during the polls.

BJP and Congress have fielded 20 candidates each, while the JDS has fielded six. As many as 33 Independents and other candidates from small parties are also in the fray. Altogether, there are 90 candidates whose fates have been sealed in the ballot box.

The election was necessitated as tenures of the MLCs are set to end on January 5.

Of the 25 outgoing MLCs, 14 are from Congress, seven from BJP and four from JDS.

There are 75 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council and the ruling BJP has 32 seats, eight short of the majority mark.

There are 29 Congress MLCs and 12 are from the JDS. The BJP has pinned its hope on the polls to gain a majority in the house.
