Imphal: In a major step towards improving the education and infrastructure sectors in the State, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today inaugurated the newly constructed District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) Building at Salam, Imphal West. He also inaugurated the newly built Ima Market at the same location. The DIET building has been constructed under the Samagra (Teacher Education) scheme while the Ima Market has been developed under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) project.
Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh acknowledged the efforts of Shri Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Lamsang Assembly Constituency for ensuring the establishment of the DIET Centre at Salam among all the constituencies in Imphal West district.
The Chief Minister also praised the Planning Department for taking the initiative to construct the Ima Market at Salam while maintaining high construction quality. He expressed confidence that Salam would see significant development in the near future.
Following the inauguration, the Chief Minister inspected the facilities and basic amenities provided in the newly constructed DIET building and the Ima Market.
It may be noted that the DIET Centre at Salam was constructed at an approved cost of Rs. 4.47 crore. The amount was sanctioned by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and was released to the Education Engineering Wing for execution of the project. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has approved the establishment of 16 DIET Centres in Manipur, with one centre to be set up in each of the State’s 16 districts.
At present, nine DIET Centres are functional. The remaining centres are at various stages of completion and operationalisation. The Ima Market at Salam has been constructed at a total cost of Rs. 3.00 crore. The project was approved by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, as one of the 26 projects sanctioned for Manipur under SASCI for the year 2022–23.
The programme organised by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Government of Manipur was attended by Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, MLA, Lamsang AC; Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West; Prof. (Dr.) D.V.L.N. Somayajulu, Director, National Institute of Technology (NIT); Prof. Aheibam Romel Singh, Director, SCERT; R.K. Radhesana, Director, Planning Department; senior officials of SCERT and the Planning Department; students and local residents.
