CM Biren strongly condemns brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai by terrorists

The Chief Minister also apologised to the public for security lapses in connection with the incident, and further condemned the police personnel for not intervening while Abonmai was being abducted in broad daylight.

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Nongthongbam Biren Singh on Friday strongly condemned the brutal and inhuman killing of Athuan Abonmai by a suspected hill-based armed militant group on Wednesday evening. The Chief Minister also announced that any person, politician, CSOs involved in the barbaric incident will not be spared.

Abonmai, advisor and former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland), apex Zeliangrong Naga body, met a gruesome death in Tamenglong district after being abducted by unknown persons.

Abonmai, who spoke against the NSCN (IM) in local television social discussion programmes, left his Langol Tarung residence in Imphal West in the morning to attend a community outreach programme of the state government attended by chief minister N Biren Singh.

Speaking to media persons at his office, Biren said Bonmai was an upright politician and unique social worker who always spoke for unity and integrity of Manipur and added that the barbaric and cowardly act of killing of Athuan Abonmai is very unfortunate and highly condemnable.

The Chief Minister also apologised to the public for security lapses in connection with the incident, and further condemned the police personnel for not intervening while Abonmai was being abducted in broad daylight.

Stating that at least 16 police personnel including one OC, SI and ASI have been suspended so far, Biren, who also holds home portfolio, said that if there is involvement of any groups/s that are under ceasefire agreement with the Centre, then the case will be handed over to the NIA.

The Chief Minister said that a combing operation has already begun to arrest the culprits and that the operation will continue till all the involved persons are arrested.

Sharing the pain and sorrow of the family members and relatives of Abonmai, the Chief Minister said the state government will decide on providing ex-gratia to the next kin of the deceased and also extend all possible assistance to the bereaved family members.
