Chakma bodies demand inquiry into Tripuri infiltration from Bangladesh

At least 860 families with a population of about 8,600 persons from 28 Tripuri villages under the Khagrachari district of Bangladesh have fled to Tripura and settled in various places since 2000.

Agartala: The six leading Chakma (one of the tribes of Tripura) organizations today called for state-wide inquiry into the infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals in Tripura, claiming at least 10,000 Bangladeshi Tripuris (another tribal community) entered into India from Bangladesh through the state border.

Tripura Miley Joda, Chakma Socio-cultural Development Society, Tripura Rejjya Chakma Gabujjye Joda, Chakma Buddhist Welfare Society, Chakma Youths Progressive Association, Chakma Socio-cultural Organisation and Chakma Development Foundation of India in a memorandum to Chief Minister Biplab Deb stated that 108 Rohingya refugees were arrested in the last three years and thousands of Bangladeshi infiltrated in the state, which needs an impartial investigation on their ethnic origin.

They pointed out apprehending the attacks of Muslim settlers in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, at least 10,000 Tripuris from bordering villages of Bangladesh have settled in the bordering localities of South Tripura and Dhalai districts.
