Ottawa: Canada has referred Russia’s military operation in Ukraine to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced.

“Canada has decided to refer the situation in Ukraine to the International Criminal Court (ICC). We are working with other ICC member states to take this significant action as a result of numerous allegations of the commission of serious international crimes in Ukraine by Russian forces, including war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Joly said in a statement on Tuesday.

Last Thursday, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, responding to calls for help from the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics against the aggression of Ukrainian troops.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the operation was targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only, stressing that the civilian population is not in danger.
