Silchar: In a proactive step towards disaster readiness, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, convened a high-level meeting on Friday, to assess and enhance flood preparedness measures for the year.
Chaired by the District Commissioner (DC) of Cachar, Mridul Yadav, the meeting brought together key officials to review departmental preparedness, focusing on flood mitigation and emergency response strategies.
A landmark moment in the meeting was the official launch of the CFRC Portal,(Community Facilitation & Resource Centre)by DC Mridul Yadav, in the presence of Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya and the MLAs of Borkhola and Katigorah. This newly introduced digital platform is expected to streamline disaster response mechanisms and strengthen interdepartmental coordination, ensuring a more efficient and organized response to natural calamities.
The Sahayata Portal, introduced in 2024 to facilitate post-flood damage assessment, was another highlight of the discussions. DDMA officials provided a detailed briefing on its performance, emphasizing its pivotal role in ensuring swift relief and rehabilitation for affected communities. The portal has been instrumental in accurately assessing damages to homes and infrastructure, expediting compensation and assistance for those impacted by disasters.
As flood prevention remains a priority, the Water Resources Department (WRD), Cachar, provided an update on ongoing flood protection measures. The DC stressed the urgency of ensuring that embankments, flood barriers, and drainage systems are fully functional before the monsoon season. The department was instructed to expedite pending projects and conduct regular inspections to minimize flood risks.
Preparedness for relief and emergency response was also extensively reviewed. The DC directed all concerned departments to maintain sufficient stocks of essential relief materials, including food, drinking water, medicines, and shelter supplies. The Health Department was advised to keep emergency medical teams on standby, while the Food and Civil Supplies Department was tasked with ensuring the availability of fodder for livestock if needed.
The meeting further emphasized early warning systems, disaster response coordination, and interdepartmental collaboration to enhance overall preparedness. Stressing the importance of a proactive approach, DC Mridul Yadav urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the residents of Cachar District against potential disasters.
The session concluded with a collective commitment from all departments to strengthen disaster management efforts and work in coordination for an effective and timely response to any flood-related emergencies in 2025.
