Kohima: Border tension ran high between Nagaland and Assam after Assam Police personnel reportedly tried to set up a Police Outpost by plunging tents and placing machine guns in a hilltop near Vikuto village under Tzurangkong Range of Mokokchung district bordering Mariani in Assam.

According to official sources, Wednesday Assam Police personnel along with Assam Forest Guards and Home Guards personnel arrived at the spot yesterday morning.

On noticing the development, Nagaland Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) of the Nagaland Armed Police personnel reached the spot, were later joined by the Border Magistrate Tzurangkong, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Mangkolemba and Dobhasis (traditional officials).

Sources said that the Assam Police officer purportedly responded that the contingent was to verify if any kind of “developmental activities” were being carried out by the villagers of Vikuto and to prevent any such activities as Assam claimed it was a disputed area, but the Assam Police refused to leave the site.

Assam Police rather persisted that the Deputy Commissioners of Mokokchung and his Jorhat counterpart should meet on the matter, sources said.
