Bangladesh Parliament Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah dies

He was born at Gotia village in Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha on April 15 in 1946.

Dhaka: Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, MP passed away, officials informed on Saturday.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York around 2 am on Saturday (Bangladesh local time).

Fazle Rabbi’s elder daughter Fahima Rabbi Rita and his personal secretary Toufiqul Islam were present with him when he breathed his last.

Miah who had been suffering from cancer for a long time was known as a valiant freedom fighter who fought against the Pakistan Army in Sector 11 during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

He was a member of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th Jatiya Sangsad as a Jatiya Party candidate and was defeated in the 8th Jatiya Sangsad elections of 2001 as a candidate of the Bangladesh Awami League.

He was elected as a member of the Parliament in 2008, 2014, and 2018.
